A few months back, Little Girl and I went to Telunas, a getaway trip to take a break from the city life and to celebrate my birthday in the cosy private island. We spent a total of 5 days 4 nights in Telunas, 2 nights in Telunas Beach Resort and 2 nights in Telunas Private Island, and so we are able to share with you our experience in our trip there. Telunas is a low-key secret paradise that is only 2.5 hours away from Singapore and an undiscovered gem amidst the Indonesian Riau Islands
The number 1 reason why we are here is the beach. On the first day, we sat by the beach, took a romantic stroll along the coast, find and play with some shrimps, hermit crabs and tiny crabs and of course, flew my drone up to take a look at the spectacular view of the resort and flew to the private island. The resort beach seawater is very shallow and safe for children to wander around.
Campfire / Bonfire
On some nights, the staff at Telunas will arrange a bonfire where guests are highly encouraged to join, mingle around and roast marshmallow. If there is any bonfire activity at night, the resort staff will inform you proactively at meal time. As the sky gets darker, you can see the resort staff lighting up the huge campfire near the beach and more importantly, you get to roast marshmallows for yourself.
The resort has an Orion 130ST telescope onsite so budding astronomers will be able to gaze through it and gawk at numerous stars that light up the night sky. We chose to stay in our room to watch the night sky as the stars are pretty visible in front of us.
With my Phantom 4, we saw a huge trail behind the beach resort and so, we began hiking into the woods and discovered a ropes adventure course and water tanks. As there are not many visitors coming to Telunas, the trail is not very safe to walk and so, we turned around and got back to our resort. In the private island, you can walk along the nature path that leads you to the other side of the private island
If you are at the Telunas Beach Resort, you can join the fun with the rest of the crews on the jetty fishing. We did see some visitors fishing at the jetty but we are totally not into it.
Dock and Tower Jumping
You get to choose between a low deck and high deck for your jump. An approximately 7 metres above sea level, the tower jump is a tall structure for people to leap off and jump into the sea. However, there is no option of wearing a life vest and so, this isn’t recommended for non-swimmers.
Kayaking and Stand-up Paddle Boarding
As Little Girl and I prefer easy, light-hearted and relaxing activity, we chose to kayak around the island.
Jungle & Waterfall Trekking
Telunas Resort will arrange jungle hikes from time to time where a local guide leads a group of guests on a 10 km route through a jungle. We had our breakfast earlier that morning and set off at 8am for the jungle trekking with the rest of the Telunas visitors. We were told that the trekking will have a lot of mosquitoes and other wildlife, and so, avoid wearing dark/black clothes as it will attract mosquitoes and insects. That morning, we trekked about 3 hours and the path leads to the Black Pool Waterfall.
The Black Pool Waterfall is at-first seen as an inky black pool. However, as we got closer and jumped into the pool, the water is very fresh and the temperature is very refreshing. We saw shrimps and fishes near the edges of the rocks and at the point when we were there, there were many other visitors. At the waterfall, you get to climb to 3 separate platforms to jump off into the pool and depending on your choice of intensity, the highest cliff is about 12 meters above water level but we were told that that platform is not suitable for cliff jumping anymore. And so, I challenged myself and chose the first 2 platforms.
With the help of the Telunas staff, you get to experience the traditional way to get shrimps at night in the shallow water of Telunas Beach at night. You will be given a headlight, a long metal fork that is for you to spear your fishes and crabs, and a pail for you to store your catch. As the body of the shrimp is almost transparent in the daytime, the headlight helps to find the shrimps as their bodies reflect lights from our headlight. That being said, it takes a lot of patience to find the shrimps.
That night, we managed to catch some shrimps and crabs – yes, you can use the fork to spear the crabs. It’s a once in a lifetime experience to have.
Private Candlelight dinner
Of course, you are able to arrange a candlelight dinner for 2, which comes at extra cost, and we simply love the ambiance and settings for the dinner. This was all secretly planned for my birthday by Little Girl and she had no problem arranging the candlelight dinner with the Telunas staff.
Personally, I had a great time there with Little Girl and will recommend Telunas Beach Resort and Telunas Private Island to my friends and families. If your primary reason is to detach yourself from the city life and internet for a couple of days, Telunas is definitely worth the visit.
