One of the few remaining long-standing fishing villages in Hong Kong, Tai O Fishing Village is a quaint and picturesque village, with the traditional stilt houses predominant of the old Southern Chinese fishing villages, and it is one of the few remaining places where you can still see them in Hong Kong. A majority of the community’s incomes comes from tourism, selling dried seafood and traditional Chinese snacks, and offering boat tours through the stilt houses with a small fee in Tai O Fishing Village.

Getting there, Tai O Fishing Village
Tai O is located on the northwestern coast of the Hong Kong’s biggest island – Lantau island. You can either take a bus (Bus 21 from Ngong Ping or Bus 11 from Tung Chung) or a taxi.

Tai O Street Market
As you explore around Tai O, you can still see old folks making a living via the traditional way at this lively market. Tai O is famous for its specialties such as dried seafood, salted fish, shrimp and sauce (XO sauce).

As younger generations moved out to the cities over the few last decades, fishing communities, shrimp paste, salt production industry and many local scenes began to disappear.

Boat ride
One of the must-do in Tai O is to get onto one of their boat rides. It is a short 20 minutes journey and you get to see MORE happenings around the village!

Foods and snacks
Every turn and corner, you will encounter different food and snacks. Most of them are seafood as Tai O is a fishing village.
